The American Museum of Natural History (“the Company”)has engaged Major, Lindsey & Africa on an exclusive basis to conduct a search for an Assistant General Counsel.
Company: The American Museum of Natural History is a renowned non-profit, educational organization located in New York City. AMNH is one of the largest and most complex natural history museums in the world. It is a diverse scientific, educational and cultural institution that includes a research enterprise of approximately 200 full time scientists; the Richard Gilder Graduate School, which confers the Ph.D. in Comparative Biology and the Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in Earth science; collections of more than 34 million specimens and artifacts that constitute an invaluable record of life on Earth; one of the largest natural history libraries in the world; 45 permanent exhibition halls, special exhibition galleries in which it displays award-winning exhibitions, as well as the Rose Center for Earth and Space which houses the Hayden Planetarium, where planetarium shows are shown; and the newly-opened Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation, which houses a live insectarium, butterfly vivarium, floor-to-ceiling collections displays, and an immersive video experience. AMNH also distributes its scientific and educational content, special exhibitions and planetarium shows to venues in more than 20 countries.
Overview: Reporting to the Senior Vice President & General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel will be part of a four-attorney office including the general counsel and two other lawyers. This position will be responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to senior management at the Museum on a wide range of matters including charitable gifts, non-profit tax issues, and contracts.
Experience: The successful candidate will have 5+ years of significant legal experience gained in a law firm or comparable institution. The candidate will have a broad knowledge of New York not-for-profit and education law, and federal tax exemption laws and regulations.
Location/Relocation: New York, New York. Local candidates are strongly preferred. AMNH is open to considering candidates interested in relocating to New York City.
