Marriott International is a global lodging and hospitality company based out of Bethesda, Maryland. Marriott’s Law Department provides legal advice and support to Marriott’s internal clients and business units.Â
The attorney in this position will be based in Marriott’s worldwide corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland and will report in to the Vice President & Assistant General Counsel leading the Consumer Operations legal team. This team is part of the larger Consumer Operations, Global Services and U.S./Canada Lodging practice group. The Consumer Operations team handles a varied portfolio and provides practical legal solutions and negotiates complex agreements to help Marriott achieve its business objectives relating to Marriott’s consumer facing business, including Marriott’s distribution channels, loyalty program, gift card program, insurance program, strategic partnerships (e.g., co-branded credit cards), marketing, sales, revenue management, Homes and Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott Boutiques.   Â
The work of the team supporting Consumer Operations principally take the form of providing commercial transactions support (such as negotiating, drafting and interpreting various types of commercial agreements) and providing legal guidance for the commerce part of Marriott’s business.  The members of this legal team tackle novel and cutting-edge issues to support the business on new opportunities and solutions for enhancing customer engagement and experience.Â
Expected Contributions
The attorney in this position will primarily focus on providing legal support for Marriott’s growing area of new business collaborations and Travel Marketplace, including the travel insurance program, retail, Homes and Villas by Marriott Bonvoy.  The attorney in this position will:
Research and analyze the legal landscape in potential new markets within the U.S. and internationally and advise the business on expansion strategy, support the business in complying with various regulatory requirements, and establish appropriate processes and best practices
Negotiate and draft relevant commercial agreements, such as distribution, fulfilment and channel management agreements and related amendments
Be the primary legal point of contact for the insurance business discipline, including assisting the business in standing up travel and related insurance offerings in new markets through strategic alliances, and provide support to other disciplines responsible for new business initiatives and collaborations Â
In addition to drafting relevant agreements, provide advice on marketing materials, communications and general operations relating to the Travel Marketplace and new collaborations
Assist on projects relating to Homes and Villas by Marriott Bonvoy and Marriott Bonvoy Boutiques
Understand and resolve novel legal issues relating to new business and strategic initiatives for the evolving Travel Marketplace and the impact of these initiatives on the broader Marriott ecosystemÂ
Supervise outside counsel and provide feedback accordingly
Collaborate with colleagues within the Law Department and works effectively with internal clients and business partners
Identify relevant issues and coordinate with colleagues and across the business on  tax, insurance, intellectual property, data privacy and cybersecurity mattersÂ
Participate on projects or committees as needed providing legal advice and guidance
Participate in department or division-wide initiatives and special projects on an as needed basis.
Candidate Profile
Excellent academic record with a law degree from a top U.S. law school
Minimum of 6 years of legal experience in a law firm of national reputation, with experience in drafting commercial agreements
Active Bar membership
Excellent drafting and negotiating skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong business ethics and personal integrity
Ability to think strategically and provide leadership when needed
Ability to work independently, take ownership of issues, and effectively, creatively and thoughtfully resolve problems – needs to be a self-starter with a high degree of resourcefulness
