Overview: The General Counsel will lead American Seafoods’ legal, regulatory and compliance functions as well as sit on the executive team for the company. S/he will be responsible for advising the Chief Executive Officer, Board, and other members of the executive leadership team, focus on important legal, regulatory and business issues facing the organization, and provide effective strategies and informed opinions. A pragmatic business sense, a good sense of humor, a healthy “fire in the belly”, proven capability in building better processes, and a passion for and insight into teamwork are essential qualities. The General Counsel will be based in Seattle and will report to the Chief Executive Officer Mikel Durham.
Firm: American Seafoods is an industry-leading harvester, processor, distributor and marketer of a diverse array of seafood products from sustainably managed fisheries in U.S. waters off Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Their products include Alaska Pollock, Pacific hake, Yellowfin sole, and Pacific cod, and are used for human nutrition, animal nutrition and dietary supplements. Fish are harvested and processed at-sea aboard the company’s six state-of-the-art catcher processor vessels, unloaded and stored in the company’s own high-volume cold storage facility in Alaska, and then marketed and distributed to U.S. and international customers. The company has U.S. offices in Seattle, Washington, and Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and additional offices in Europe and Asia.
Compensation: Compensation package includes base salary and annual cash bonus incentive.
Experience: Minimum 10 years’ experience as General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel with broad responsibility in a sophisticated corporation advising companies in the areas of corporate and securities law, corporate governance, litigation, risk and dispute management, labor and employment, executive compensation, SEC disclosure and reporting, regulatory, legislative and compliance. Foundational experience gained in a law firm is required. Significant experience in seafood or other maritime sector including exposure to blue collar workforce is preferred.
