The Sr. Counsel, Intellectual Property will partner with technology organizations across all NBCUniversal businesses in creating, capturing and protecting innovation, and will work with business unit lawyers on navigating IP technology risks and opportunities associated with key transactions. He or she will manage the legal elements of the NBCUniversal Patent Program.
Responsibilities •Partner with emerging technologies and engineering teams to develop IP strategies and pursue patents on critical technologies.
•Help develop NBCUniversal’s patent position in strategic technology areas by coordinating legal aspects of invention harvesting and evaluation processes.
•Oversee drafting, filing, prosecution, and maintenance of U.S. and non-U.S. patents by outside counsel.
•Educate engineers on technology-related IP issues.
• Oversee patent risk assessment analyses for key emerging products.
•Draft and negotiate agreements pertaining to innovation and emerging technologies, including prototyping, R&D and joint development activities.
•Advise business unit lawyers on IP technology elements of agreements with partners and vendors, and help to devise uniform policies for such elements for use in appropriate cases.
•Support IP aspects of company’s participation in standards-setting organizations and cross-industry initiatives.
• Provide IP technology support for company acquisitions and equity investments, including helping to structure and negotiate IP provisions and conducting IP due diligence.
•Manage patent portfolio legal budget.
•Other matters as needed.
Qualification/Requirements •Member in good standing of the California State Bar of another State Bar and registered as in-house counsel.
•JD or LLM degree from an accredited law school.
•A minimum of six years of patent-and IP transactions-related law firm or in-house work experience.
•Science background preferred.
