GENERAL COUNSEL Overview:
This role is a rare and compelling opportunity for a mission-driven lawyer with a deep passion for helping to effect transformational change. The Walton Family Foundation (“WFF” or “Foundation”) is a dynamic philanthropic organization seeking to have lasting impact in the areas of K- 12 education, environmental conservation, and quality of life in the home region of Northwest Arkansas http://www.waltonfamilyfoundation.org/. The Foundation’s work has expanded in terms of complexity and reach, thus requiring its first in-house counsel to help guide the Foundation’s continued growth and provide advice on a wide range of legal matters that arise with increasing frequency, including: compliance with laws and regulations applicable to private foundations; general corporate and transactional matters; formulating governance and compliance policies; advising program staff with respect to grantmaking; and special assignments from the Executive Director or family members. The General Counsel will be on the front lines of helping to advance WFF’s critical mission, occupying an integral role on the leadership team and reporting to WFF’s Executive Director, Kyle Peterson. The General Counsel will also partner with Carrie Walton Penner, the Chair of their Board, and will support the family and work in close coordination with WFF’s Accounting and Operations Director. The General Counsel will also advise WFF’s program leaders and core managers in all WFF offices. This position will also manage and work with outside counsel when additional support is needed.

WFF is a thirty-year-old foundation with the creative energy of a start-up company, and is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. Experience and Qualifications:
Minimum of 15 years of legal experience at a major law firm, multinational corporation, investment/venture fund, foundation, and/or large non-profit organization, and experience advising on issues related to non-profit laws and private foundation tax rules. WFF is seeking an energetic, entrepreneurial, innovative and passionate advocate for the Foundation’s work, who excels in a startup environment; is accustomed to engaging positively with a variety of stakeholders with disparate needs and perspectives; can anticipate issues and creatively solve problems; and can deftly interface with individuals and organizations spanning the non-profit, for-profit, venture and government realms with equal ease.
