Overview: The Corporate Counsel will be integrally involved in supporting various business units across the company, including Leasing, Construction, Property Management, and Accounting. The Corporate Counsel will focus primarily on developing a process for compliance across all business units in accordance with its governing documents including loan agreements, management agreements, CC&R’s, construction and other agreements. The Corporate Counsel will also develop document retention and other organizational best practices for legal departments.
Firm: Sunset Development is the developer, owner and manager of Bishop Ranch, which includes a 10 million square foot corporate business park with office, retail, and hospitality space.
Compensation: This position will provide competitive base compensation and an incentive bonus based on the Corporate Counsel’s and Sunset Development’s performance.

Sunset Development is seeking a talented and highly motivated Corporate Counsel who will play a vital role in supporting all aspects of its core businesses but with a focus on responsibilities listed below. This position reports directly to Sunset Development’s Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel. The Corporate Counsel’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
an understanding of a wide variety of issues relating to real estate, finance, leasing and corporate compliance;
be integral in developing structure and processes for Sunset Development’s legal department;
manage and oversee compliance across all business operations;
experience with and an understanding of various agreements related to the business, particularly real estate finance agreements but also including management agreements, construction agreements, CC&Rs, and development agreements;
working closely with and reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel of Sunset Development; and
partnering with internal and external clients to support business objectives in a manner consistent with applicable law and corporate risk tolerance.
Education from a top-tier U.S. law school required.
3+ years of relevant real estate finance experience at a top tier law firm and/or in-house legal department;
member of California Bar or a Registered In-House Counsel with State Bar of California;
deep experience drafting, negotiating and interpreting a wide variety of real estate, lending, and other contracts;
experience assessing and identifying compliance issues;
ability to quickly identify, analyze and propose solutions to legal and business issues;
ability to work proactively and take ownership of legal initiatives to help grow the business;
self motivated, will integrate themselves with the team and can forge relationships with team members from various disciplines;
entrepreneurial mindset and a desire to take a lead role in creating and developing internal processes for Sunset Development;
excellent verbal and written communication skills;
desire and aptitude to work in an extremely detail-oriented role;
must have a deep appreciation for detail while also being able to identify and address the larger issues; and
ability to interact with and present to senior management.
