Cigna seeks to hire a Senior Counsel focused on managing complex healthcare litigation and protecting our customers, plans and health care professionals from fraud and abuse. The Senior Counsel will be a key contributor to both the U.S. healthcare and litigation teams and will also serve as the primary legal advisor to the Company’s Special Investigations Unit.
Manage complex litigation disputes; negotiate (together with appropriate business persons and other lawyers), draft and/or approve settlement agreements relating to litigation, dispute resolution, regulatory disputes and commercial claims.
Develop and implement comprehensive, coordinated company-wide legal strategies, policies and procedures to avoid and recover losses related to health care fraud and abuse.
Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive, coordinated company-wide legal strategies, policies and procedures to deter health care fraud and abuse and to recover losses related to health care fraud and abuse.
Conduct internal investigations and advise clients in connection with internal audits and investigations
Maintain an up-to-date understanding of, and proactively counsel the business on all significant legal and business external developments potentially affecting the Company's legal, regulatory and reputational risks and relevant court filings and decisions.
Manage outside counsel effectively and efficiently, and consistent with applicable budgets. Work creatively with outside counsel to minimize fees and costs
Interface with key external constituents including state Attorneys General, and relevant state and federal regulators.
Manage other corporate or class action litigation matters as appropriate.
The new Senior Counsel must be an experienced litigation attorney with the requisite legal background in fraud and abuse-type civil or criminal cases. The following background is strongly preferred:
Minimum of +10 years’ experience in litigation in the public or private sector (ideally within a complex, regulated industry).
Broad experience in subject matters such as civil fraud, public corruption, white collar crime, and healthcare.
Strong business knowledge and acumen demonstrated via prior roles. Operate with an enthusiasm to learn the business.
Experience interacting/interfacing across a broad array of stakeholders in a complex organizational structure.
Critical Competencies for Success
Legal experience: A highly trained lawyer with strong litigation experience; a lawyer who is high-energy, engaged and has demonstrated that he or she is a hands-on attorney, proactive and innovative in litigation strategy, settlement matters as well as effectively supervising outside counsel. The successful candidate must have a proven track record of accomplishment as a lawyer with great intellect and strong technical legal expertise.
Influencing/Interpersonal skills: The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, proactive and able to anticipate problems and find solutions; he or she must be able to work independently and be able to establish direction and obtain commitment from the group he or she is advising; the successful candidate will have exceptional communication, interpersonal, negotiating and consensus building skills with the ability to work effectively across Cigna.
Business acumen: The successful candidate knows how businesses work; is knowledgeable of practices, policies and trends that may influence or impact the industry; operates with an appreciation for internal and external as well as technical and business perspectives.
Additional Salary Information: Competitive salary based on experience. Total compensation includes base salary, bonus targets, and long term incentives.
