The Assistant General Counsel for Transactions reports to the Port Authority’s First Deputy General Counsel. The attorney will lead a team of 25 - 30 attorneys and legal staff and be responsible for providing legal and strategic advice with respect to all transactions handled by the Port Authority.
The Assistant General Counsel is expected to be a leader in the Agency interacting every day with the most senior Port Authority leaders along with being leader within the Law Department focused relentlessly on ethics and integrity, and on guiding the professional growth of lawyers and staff. The Assistant General Counsel should be an extraordinary lawyer and an extraordinary leader, who is passionate about public service and about making a real and lasting contribution to the region.
The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey was established in 1921, by a compact between New York and New Jersey, approved pursuant to the Constitution by the United States Congress. Today, the Port Authority operates five airports; the busiest bridge and bus terminal in the world; the busiest shipping terminal on the East Coast; and the PATH system and The World Trade Center.
The Port Authority’s 125-person Law Department is led by the General Counsel and is based in Manhattan. The goal of the Law Department is to be the best full-service public law firm in the United States.

The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of legal experience in a wide variety of areas, including: project finance or structured finance transactions, contracts, regulatory, construction, real estate, leasing, financial, public finance and environmental matters, gained through a combination of major law firm and/or in-house or government roles of increasing visibility and responsibility. In addition to possessing exceptional credentials, an ability to engage and communicate clearly and concisely, and the facility to manage a large number of complex issues simultaneously, she or he must possess extensive leadership capabilities and management experience.
