IPG Photonics is one of the leading technology companies in the world, if not the pre-eminent laser manufacturer in the world. As a patent practitioner at IPG, you will have access to and work with some of the brightest minds in laser physics while seeing the innovations generated there migrating into products sold for a breadth of laser applications including material processing (welding, cutting, cleaning, ablation, annealing), telecommunications, medical and cinema. In addition, the business model of IPG requires the patent practitioner to write patent applications on new technologies being applied in new applications that were previously not served by lasers. The patent practitioner will be a member of a small, cohesive law department dedicated to efficiently solving the problems of IPG, a fast growing, entrepreneurial technology company.
Patent Prosecution (75% of time)
Draft and file a minimum of 15 patent applications per year
Engage in US and foreign prosecution
Assist in invention disclosure harvesting
Freedom to Operate / Patentability Analysis (15% of time)
Assist with IP related contract review and drafting (10%)
Attorney with a minimum of 5 years’ experience
Current registration with a state bar in good standing
Laser physics and/or optics
Passion for technology
Ability and willingness to learn/refine patent drafting skills
Ability to make decisions and work independently
Experience regularly interacting with inventors
Desired, but not required, experience
In house experience
International patent prosecution experience
Travel to Russian and/or German facilities required at least once per year
Position located at either Marlborough or Oxford, MA, but requires travel between two facilities at least once per week
Reports to World Wide Director of Intellectual Property
Russian language skills, a plus
This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22C.F.R. §120.15 are required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee. License exception Technology and software under restriction (TSR) defined in 15 CFR 740.6 may permit person from Country Group B.
