Reporting to the SVP, Chief Legal Officer, this position provides strategic legal expertise and leadership to senior level managers in the conduct of company business for CUNA Mutual group. The VP, Associate General Counsel is accountable for the management and oversight of a team of attorneys, law specialists and legal support roles for a significant and complex portion of the overall legal function. This role is a key driver of strategy development and program level strategy execution.
Leads team of attorneys, law specialists and legal support staff responsible for supporting the HR/benefits, labor relations, IT, investments, corporate development, finance, customer and vendor contracting, and board governance functions
Utilizes a high degree of general business knowledge and judgment, including an in-depth understanding of CUNA Mutual Group operations, customers, programs, and plans to advise executive and senior management to help CUNA Mutual Group achieve its corporate goals and develop competitive advantages resulting from changing legal and business environments
Has broad responsibility and great autonomy in representing CUNA Mutual Group
Establishes close partnerships with assigned business leaders and their teams that results in counsel being sought in area of expertise
Delivers innovative legal solutions that anticipate future legal issues related to product, program, customer and operational needs of CUNA Mutual Group
Maintains a highly visible corporate presence and countenance that inspires trust and invites consultation from persons both inside and outside CUNA Mutual Group to advance the corporate mission
Participates in the development of corporate strategic plans/policies and business plans/procedures in conjunction with executive and senior management
Leads projects with notable risk and complexity; develops the strategy for project execution; provides functional thought leadership
Anticipates internal /external business challenges and/or regulatory issues; recommends process, product or service improvements
Provides mentoring and coaching to other attorneys and subordinates
Matches legal resources utilized to the level of risk and complexity
Proactively develops internal and external relationships in areas of expertise that can be leveraged to gain insight on issues and best practices
Develops relationships with all levels of leaders
Authority and responsibility to assist clients in the development of strategic and business plans and procedures in conjunction with Executive and Senior management
Matches legal resource utilized to the level of risk and complexity
Actively monitors industry legal and business developments; identifies and drives business changes given developments in area of expertise and businesses impacted
Educates clients on legal developments in area of expertise

Juris Doctor or L.L.B. Degree and continuing legal education within areas of specialty and responsibility
Authorized to practice law in the State of Wisconsin or applicable jurisdiction
Generally up to ten years of legal experience with overall expert status in specific law areas
In-depth knowledge of CUNA Mutual Group products, programs, operations, policies and strategies (or demonstrated ability to rapidly come up to speed)
In-depth knowledge of credit union marketplace preferred.
In-depth knowledge of area of expertise gained through experience in the insurance industry and formal education
Ability to recognize current and anticipate future developments in the legal environment, marketplace and CUNA Mutual Group products, programs and operations
Ability to understand and use economic, financial, and industry data to appropriately balance business opportunities and legal risks
Ability to interact with clients and other parties in a manner that inspires a high degree of trust, invites consultation and promotes communication
Significant degree of business acumen to enable attorney to evaluate and propose alternatives that are not only legally permissible but which also make sense from a business standpoint
Strong analytical skills, creativity and significant experience in analyzing and providing practical, effective solutions to significant, complex transactions and issues
Ability to lead, organize and coordinate committees, work groups, project teams and/or task forces and effectively access CUNA Mutual Group resources
Ability to negotiate, clearly communicate and to persuade others
Ability to prioritize work and to work in situations with multiple, simultaneous demands
Ability to maximize results using limited resources
