Reporting to the Vice President, Associate General Counsel -- Property & Casualty, the Senior Counsel will have a thorough understanding of company policies and objectives and under general supervision will manage responsibilities of the Law Division as assigned. His or her work generally involves handling or directing matters of importance and impact on the organization and providing assistance on matters of significance. This position is for an experienced attorney with thorough competence in several legal areas of concentration and broad-based experience, maturity, and sound judgment.
Providing advice on complex legal matters by utilizing legal expertise and strategic thinking to assess risk and recommend effective and appropriate solutions
Providing legal counsel and support to the Horace Mann Claims Department and leading and directing, as an active and collaborative partner, the work of outside counsel furnishing coverage and other legal opinions to insurance carrier affiliates of Horace Mann
Representing the company in litigation matters by negotiating with external parties, organizing responses to legal communications, and managing outside legal counsel on litigated matters
Evaluating employee complaints and, where appropriate, initiating internal investigations, providing employment law support for all HR internal investigations as well as counseling and support for human resources business partners, and provide advice and counseling to other cross-functional partners
Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a variety of agreements encountered in a corporate transactional and commercial context, including agency and technology agreements
Resolving regulatory inquiries by conducting research and drafting legal documents to provide recommendations and support lines of business
Providing leadership and guidance on governmental affairs
Providing legal counsel and support on all property and casualty products and transactions
Providing legal counsel and support on Insurance Department Market Conduct Exams
Providing legal counsel and support on Corporate Compliance and Privacy matters
Providing legal counsel and support to the Horace Mann Marketing Department on all Agent matters
Effectively managing resources by anticipating expenditures and accurately forecasting resource needs/costs
Creating a positive environment by modeling cultural expectations and guiding leaders to reward performance, accountability, diversity and inclusion, flexibility, continuous improvement, collaboration, and creativity
Advising the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Corporate Secretary, and Chief Compliance Officer and other members of executive management with respect to the duties and responsibilities outlined above.
Juris Doctor from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
Admitted to practice law by a State Bar and be eligible to register as an In-House Counsel in the State of Illinois.
Five (5) years broad-based, relevant legal experience with a mid-size to large law firm, corporation, or regulatory agency.
Meaningful experience relating to property and casualty insurance companies.
A strong desire to learn and assume ownership of highly complex, sometimes novel, legal issues.
Strong academic credentials, including a law degree from an American Bar Association
Excellent analytical, organizational, detail-oriented, verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to provide top-quality, proactive, accurate and effective legal support in a fast moving environment.
Ability to effectively work with management and other personnel.
In-house legal department experience with a public corporation.
