Job Summary: The University of Maryland Carey School of Law is seeking an Intellectual Property Clinical Instructor. The position is a part-time, 12-month appointment beginning in January 2018, with a possibility for renewal based on funding. The Clinical Instructor will provide support and share supervisory responsibilities for the Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Clinic (“IPEC”). The IPEC provides a broad range of intellectual property and business law services to high tech startups and entrepreneurs from across the State of Maryland. Law students conduct preliminary patentability searches and analyses; prepare patent applications for filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO); conduct trademark clearance searches and file trademark applications; assist with various copyright matters including registration; draft intellectual property licenses and confidentiality agreements; and counsel clients on protection of trade secrets and development of an IP strategy. This position reports to Professor Patricia Campbell, Director of the Maryland Intellectual Property Legal Resource Center and the Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Clinic.
Essential Functions: •Supervise law students enrolled in the IPEC who are providing intellectual property assistance to startup companies and entrepreneurs. This will involve attendance at client meetings, frequent meetings with student-supervisees, and review of student work product. Supervision of students will take place at Maryland Carey Law in Baltimore and at the clinic’s offices on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. •Take a lead role in supervising clinic students who are engaged in conducting patentability searches and preparing patent applications. •Serve as the Patent Program Supervisor for the Clinic’s participation in the USPTO’s Law School Clinical Certification Program. •Assist with teaching the weekly classroom meeting for the IPEC. •It is anticipated that the Clinical Instructor will work three days per week; However, we would be willing to consider a full time position at an increased salary for a candidate who also substantially satisfies the requirements for the Business Law and Entrepreneurship Clinical Instructor position posted at https://umb.taleo.net/careersection/ .
Minimum Qualifications: •J.D. plus license to practice law in Maryland. •Technical background and admission to the patent bar. •Minimum 5 years experience as a practitioner in the field of intellectual property law. Experience in patent prosecution is required. Experience in other areas of intellectual property practice is strongly preferred.
