OVERVIEW: The Senior Counsel/Assistant General Counsel reports to the General Counsel and will provide legal support for the various facilities owned or managed by Sentara. The person in this position must have a comfort level with healthcare’s regulatory framework and reimbursement programs, with particular skills in drafting a variety of contracts particular to a health system, developing policies, advising staff and management on legal issues, and regulatory and administrative matters.

EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate will have 8+ years of experience in healthcare law (although less experience will be considered for the right candidate). The ideal candidate will have in-house experience and foundational training obtained in a law firm setting, with experience in overseeing, drafting, and negotiating numerous healthcare contracts for health systems. S/he will also have some experience with a multitude of healthcare regulatory areas of law, including managed care billing, HIPAA, Stark, anti-kickback, EMTALA, Medicaid and Medicare. Experience with medical staff relations and/or health plan matters is a plus.
