USAA is hiring a creative and motivated business counselor to lead the USAA Life Company legal team. This individual will be passionate about supporting and serving USAA’s mission, fulfilling the financial needs of members of the U.S. military and their families. The Lead Life & Annuity Counsel will have extensive product development and legal experience providing solution oriented counsel, while also leading and inspiring a team of attorneys and industry professionals. A successful candidate in this role will have excellent skills as a legal technician, communicator, relationship builder and leader. The role will require operating efficiently and with confidence in a matrixed and uncertain environment.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a trusted advisor providing solution-oriented counsel to the President of USAA’s life insurance and annuities group of companies (Life Group).
Provide counsel and support to the Life Group on all legal matters, including product development and all core operating functions (including, Actuarial, Underwriting, Product Management, and Claims) as well as, management of legal compliance and regulatory risk.
Responsible for effective board and management governance structure and reporting as well as assisting on all financial, market conduct, and other matters affecting the Life Group.
Proactively maintain an understanding of developments and engage with the external industry, regulatory and litigation environments to ensure an outside-in view in support of trusted advisor role to Life Group senior leadership.
As a member of the FASG Counsel management team, the role will also work effectively as a leader within the Chief Legal Office, and will actively identify and address the integration of other lines of business and enterprise matters with those of the Life Group.
Lead, empower and professionally develop the Life Group legal team (including lawyers and paralegals), by creating a compelling work environment and facilitating the provision of expert counsel to senior Life Group leadership. The Lead Life Counsel will set the agenda, build high-performing teams, appropriately train and coach team-members, ensure development opportunities and sell the vision for the department.
JD from accredited law school and admitted to practice and in good standing in at least one state. Twelve years legal experience in the Life Insurance & Annuities or related Financial Services industry, with demonstrated understanding of the life insurance & annuities businesses and regulatory environment and proven ability to manage complex, interconnected personnel, legal and business issues. Six years leadership experience; including leading attorneys and helping them to grow professionally. Proven communication skills, both verbal and written; ability to distill complex legal issues into straightforward concepts upon which management can base decisions. Experience collaborating with key resources and stakeholders, influencing decisions and managing work to achieve strategic goals required. Executive-level business acumen in the areas of business operations, industry practices and emerging trends required.
Diverse prior work experiences including for example, in a law firm, regulator or in-house environment. Strong relationship management / customer service skills—e.g., supports legal needs of client in responsive, creative and compliant manner. Familiarity with underwriting, investments, sales and service, claims and litigation, reinsurance, governance, risk management, marketing and privacy regulations, tax treatment, and intra-company and holding company agreements. Experience in dealing with both direct and agency sales models. Knowledge of licensing and appointment requirements. Financial services acumen and an understanding of retirement planning concepts, including how life insurance, health insurance and annuity products support household financial planning. Self-sufficient in office operations including use of Microsoft Office Tools and applicable software.
